As someone who was bullied, I would make the following suggestions: 1. Teachers will almost always try to avoid involvement. ” A Kitty Geneoves “I don’t want to get involved” policy pervades most schools. . Do I need two competing parents down my throat, I’d rather just stay out of this mess and let the professionals handle it, most teacher reason. School programs must be clear and firm about the responsibility of individual teachers to stop bullying and emphasize the individual responsibility of teachers to stop bullying and where appropriate impose sanctions for those who say, “that’s not my job.” Unfortunately, some of the new anti-bullying programs suggest that professionals handle the issue, again giving teachers an excuse to avoid the issue. 2. Generally, bullied kids lack social skills. While one hates to blame the victim, working on proper dress, listening and other skills can help. 3. Children need to be taught to defend themselves. Having a friend with some pugilistic skills helps the child understand how to defend himself is important. Learning how to punch and block is helpful. Sadly many karate and self-defense programs take many months if not years to develop proper skills. Instead a knowledgeable friend can teach someone how to fight. 4. Never tell someone to ignore the problem. A parent gets a notice the bank is about to foreclose upon his home. He is nervous, angry, and scared. Just ignore it, friends say, and they can’t bother you. This psychology of ignoring bullying is still voiced and is generally the worst advice that can be given. Children should never be taught to ignore a problem, for it fosters the child's weakness, reinforces the bully's strength, and shows there are no adverse consequences from bullying. 5. Older children should be taught about weight-lifting. Some may not like it, and many kids don't like science or foreign language. Developing some modest physical strength is critical and will increase acceptance among others, and help one defend himself. Just like ancient Greece, our society looks to physical as well as mental skills 6. Teach guidance counselors common sense. All too often when a student confesses being bullied, they reveal the problems and confront the accuser who apologized and then the problem gets worse. The presumption should be that problems should not be revealed.

Legal Responses to Bullying - From The Scotsman.com - Submitted by Jacab on May 14, 2004
Court win for bullied Edinburgh girl TANYA THOMPSON HOME AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT A SCHOOLGIRL who claims she received death threats from a fellow pupil has been granted a court order to stop the bully, a move set to spark an avalanche of similar legal actions. Paula Thorburn, 14, has been issued with the interdict - only the second of its kind in Scottish legal history - to protect her from another 14-year-old girl at Tynecastle High, in Edinburgh. Paula, who suffers from borderline blindness, has also been pushed down stairs and chased in front of a bus by a gang of tormentors. Her mother said the family was forced to take action by the failure of the school and education authorities to tackle the problem - and that her daughter’s schooldays had been blighted by the bullies. Jacqueline Wallace, 38, said: "The kids were cruel and taunted her about her eyesight and her red hair. The last straw for me was when my daughter was thrown down the stairs at school. "She was absolutely petrified. These are supposed to be the best years of your life, but she has been robbed of them." In a separate action, Mrs Wallace has also won legal aid to sue Edinburgh City Council for failing to protect her daughter. The family’s lawyer, Cameron Fyfe, said parents were increasingly seeking legal redress because they felt the education authorities were not tackling bullies. Mr Fyfe, who has 50 similar cases of parents who hope to sue schools for failing to protect their children, said: "I think this type of case is going to increase. Some of my clients have tried every option, like the school and the police, so the last resort is a court order. "It’s a big issue affecting a lot of children ... and, increasingly, parents are prepared to take action." Mrs Wallace claims that up to 15 other children, as well as the girl named in the court order, are responsible for abusing her daughter, who is now to undergo counselling. "She is worried that they will still get her," her mother said. "She will not go out without me now because her confidence has gone. I didn’t realise the girl had threatened to kill her. Paula had asked to leave Edinburgh. and now I know why. "A few weeks ago she was nearly killed because she ran out in front of a bus to try to get away from them. It’s got to the stage where it is life-threatening." Paula claims the repeated abuse and death threats have left her traumatised, and that she was also regularly called "a blind bitch" by the bullies. A letter prepared by Paula’s lawyers for Edinburgh Sheriff Court states: "Her schooling has been disrupted. "She is terrified for her safety. She is frightened that … the level of harassment and abuse will escalate and that she may be further physically injured." Mr Fyfe said the sanctions for breaking the interdict, which prevents the girl from harassing Paula, are severe and could ultimately result in the girl being taken into care. Andrew Mellor, Scotland’s leading expert on bullying, said parents had a right to take legal action, but it was better if the problems could be addressed without resorting to court action. "Bullying problems should be solved in school by discussions with all parties involved. I’m not sure that legal remedies help to make the situation better for the bullied child," he said. "Schools should have a good non-bullying ethos. We should attempt to solve the problems at an early stage." Scotland’s first successful anti-bullying interdict was taken out last year by Jenny Soutar, then 17, a prefect at Blairgowrie High, in Perthshire. She claimed a group of bullies had repeatedly taunted her, once forcing her to miss an exam, and had even assaulted her in front of staff.
