Physician/Doctor of Osteopathy - Submitted by Nicole on May 09, 2010
As a mental health provider, the need to address bullying became clear quickly. None of us are without some damage to our memories if not more from a school bully. Bullying is much more than a milk money issue. The situation has changed. Unfortunately, society has not kept up. I recently began supporting the education and awareness of bullying and the impact it can have on lives it has to potential to change forever. This is an issue which will find its way into many people's lives. While I as are many people overwhelmed and astonished by the amount of "things" we have to work at and contain. The amount of items whether medical, psychiatric, social, or other, continues to grow in regards to learn, treat, etc., such is life. I was taken and found it intolerable my community wasn't "doing more" for this issue. I would do my part. I realize we all have many causes to support and many issues we wish we could devote time to. This is one of mine. I appreciate the reality we cannot give our time to everything no matter how much we would like to. I have become involved in the global issue of "bullying" (a watered down way to term the word "abuse"). Many different factors, I was motivated and determined by the story of a very special and very courageous person. She compelled me to do more. No one should live believing they don't provide anything, moving in life as ghost in their own world. EVERYONE take a big stretch! Take up AS MUCH SPACE AS YOU LIKE. YOU MATTER! When I realized the resources for the general public were poor and people need more help facebook was a natural place to begin. I started a small site on facebook which provides reviewed information for the public. I am NOT providing medical advice or guidance in any way. I do review information to attempts to provide sound resources. I do NOT provide medical information. All information is available to the general public as I am not functioning as a care provider. I am providing a consolidated source. More importantly, I provide safety information such as phone numbers and other contacts for emergencies. The benefit is a specific site which provides safety information and literature which is issue consolidated. My goal is to provide information and safety resources so that perhaps someone can benefit from these resources. Hopefully, it can provide education to someone who provides a target of this type of abuse an opportunity to grow up (work, live, and otherwise exist) without being ridiculed (isolated or other) while everyone looked the other way. If one person benefits (and I anticipate to never know if anyone does) it is worth it to me. Thank you for your time and attention reading this message. I would be delighted to provide services as a person committed to a cause. Please review my site and if I can help let me know. I attempt to link with you but was unable. Please let me know if I can be of assistance. Sincerely, N. Carlberg, DO

Caring School Community - Submitted by Stanley on December 07, 2009
Created by Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, CA, the Caring School Community program (CSC) is a research-based elementary school program that builds classroom and school community. It focuses on strengthening students connectedness to schoola pivotal element for promoting academic motivation and achievement, and for reducing drug abuse, bullying, violence, and mental health problems. The program includes four complementary components: 1. Class Meetings: a forum for teachers and students to get to know one another, discuss issues, identify and solve problems, and make decisions that affect classroom climate including establishing norms for classroom behavior 2. Cross-Age Buddies Activities: a Buddies program that pairs whole classes of older and younger students for academic and recreational activities. These activities help to build caring, cross-age relationships and create a school-wide climate of trust. 3. Home/School Connection Activities: short conversational activities (in both English and Spanish versions) that students do at home with their parent or caregiver, and then debrief back in their classroom. These activities validate the families perspectives, cultures, and traditions, and promote interpersonal understanding and appreciation. 4. School-wide Community-Building Activities: innovative, inclusive, collaborative activities that link students, parents, and school staff in building a caring, school environment. These activities foster new school traditions and promote involvement of parents who typically do not participate at school. The CSC program has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education: What Works Clearinghouse for having positive effects on student behavior; by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) for its positive effects on alcohol/tobacco use and violence prevention; by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for its effectiveness in preventing delinquency; and was one of the highest rated programs in "Safe and Sound: An Educational Leader's Guide to Evidence-based Social and Emotional Learning programs" created by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Ditch The Label - Submitted by Kristin on December 18, 2008
Greetings, My name is Kristin Duncan. I'm an 18 year old music fan that lives in Central Texas...and I need some help. I'm working hand in hand with Liam Rawrd (DiageoLiam) on a project called Ditch The Label (DTL for short). This website is helping lead a movement to beat social stereotypes. I'm passionate about this project because I've lived most of my teenage life under the shadow of negative social stereotypes, and am determined to help other teenagers like myself. The Founder, Liam, is also incredibly passionate about the cause: We want nothing more than to help teenagers to BELIEVE in themselves, and to live past labels put on them. Labels can't define a person. This website is more than a couple of kids talking about how their day went: we offer help to teenagers who are dealing with significant life issues, as well as group support for members who'd just like someone to talk to. Our site is quite large, having over 10,000 registered members and multiple topics teens can talk about, ranging from music and fashion to life help and educational tips. We've got a merchandise section, and the forums are monitored by a team of staff hand-picked by the founder for excellence in people skills, advice-giving, and general popularity with forum users. My name there is Vampi, I'm part of the Administrative staff. Many users view DTL as an escape. Many feel that the users at DTL are like a family: we are all very close, and we offer a tight network of support and encouragement. Users have said the site has become "addictive", because they get alot of positive re-enforcement on ideas and plans. The site is free from bias or preference: we are not centered around religion, music taste, fashion sense, or anything that can label a person. Users are 100% free to talk about anything on their mind, and can be sure that they will not be ridiculed for their opinions. All users opinions matter to us. But Ditch The Label is in trouble now. We're looking for new ways to inspire our users and to help get the cause out into the open. We are teens leading teens, and a hands-on approach is what we're geared towards to give our futures the kick-start they need. We're looking to work with anyone and everyone interested in helping our cause. So, I reach out with everything I believe in to anyone that can help us. I believe with your help, we can help to bring Ditch The Label to kids that may need the help. This site is for every kid who just doesn't quite "belong". The kids who have ever been told they're not "good enough". For the kids who are reaching out for help, we want to show them: we ARE here, we DO care, and we CAN help them make a difference. Warmest regards, Kristin Duncan Brand Ambassador www.DitchtheLabel.com www.myspace.com/ditchthelabel

Brandon Cole Memorial Foundation - Submitted by Lana Cole on June 01, 2007
This foundation is a memorial to Brandon Cole, who took his own life at the age of 14 after years of battling an incurable neurological disease. The bullying and teasing he endured because he was “different” played a huge role in his decision to end his own life. Our aim is to promote education, awareness and commitment in creating a bully-free Alberta for our children. We also plan to draw attention to the ever-increasing number of teen suicides that plague this province each year. We must continue to speak of these issues if we are ever to make progress.

Auther and director, ventriloquist presenter - Submitted by Val Hilliker on December 03, 2003
Fighting bullies with puppets John Gradon Calgary Herald Monday, November 24, 2003 They're taking the fight to the bullies. And they'll use any weapon they can to reform or subdue the bully, empower the bullied with heightened self-esteem, and transform the mere bystander into a witness willing to intervene. Maybe even ventriloquism. Maybe even theatre. The will to deal with bullying in society -- and, in particular, in our schools -- would appear to be gathering momentum, as it should, in light of events in Alberta such as the Taber school shooting and, more recently, the Sylvan Lake slushie poisonings. In Taber, the teen who shot an older teen to death was -- and, of course, it can neither be condoned nor defended -- acting out of a rage born of his overreaction to bullying. In Sylvan Lake, three schoolgirls took their antipathic, bullying attitude toward another group, and one girl in particular, to the extreme and were jailed as a consequence. So inevitably, awareness of bullying and its potentially dire consequences, and the willingness to tackle the problem, have heightened. The Town of Cochrane has taken the unusual step of declaring its intention to become a "bully-free" zone and set up the mechanisms to achieve the goal. Yet, it's even more gratifying to know that in addition to concerned educators, civic and school authorities, others are becoming involved in the anti-bullying campaign and are using their particular fields of expertise to help hammer the message home. Step up mother of three children, ventriloquist of 27 years, Val Hilliker, for instance. And then there's Leslie Holth and her All Nations Theatre Society. Separately, they are among those walking the walk. With a puppeteer, Hilliker is hitting schools and churches presenting and performing her Survivor knock-off program called Sticks and Stones. She uses similar teaching principles as famed American anti-bullying expert Barbara Coloroso, who was in Calgary last week to talk to educators. Like Coloroso, Hilliker is using a poem called Don't Laugh at Me as the platform to involve children and church congregations in the active process of identifying and then eliminating bullying characters in a play. The aim is to recreate the make-believe world in the real world. "The response is amazing," she says. "Everyone gets involved and learns at the same time. "Bullying comes in all shapes and sizes and knows no economic, sexual or age boundaries. Bullying can be found in body language, words, financial, emotional and physical terms. "We must teach our children that they are valuable and build their sense of self-worth to an extent where they eliminate the acceptability of bullying," says Hilliker, who has a website at www.valhilliker.com and works in conjunction with Project Ploughshares. Meanwhile Holth, newly appointed general manager of the All Nations Theatre Society, says: "Our mandate is theatre for social change. We use theatre to address a variety of issues, such as violence, bullying and racism." She maintains that All Nations, partly funded by the United Way and the Alberta Lottery Fund, is the only company in Calgary presenting "forum theatre," an interactive style of ideal for working with young people. "We go into a school for an entire week with a play. Currently, we are presenting The Other, written by Calgarian Doug Curtis, which features a young person from another country arriving in Canada and being bullied and subjected to racist taunts. "The week starts off with the play being presented without interruption and then being re-presented with the children being invited to intervene when they see something wrong, and then they become part of the play themselves. "For the rest of the week, the actors work with groups of youngsters writing their own plays, which are presented on the final day," says Holth, whose organization can be tracked at www.calcna.ab.ca/ants/. Holth also knows about the Don't Laugh at Me poem by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin. It's a plea for the tolerance of difference. The opening lines read: "Don't laugh at me. Don't call me names/Don't take your pleasure from my pain . . . " That is a message worth spreading by whatever means.

(Recommended for grades 4-8)
Content: L, D & Graphic depiction of burn scars.
Color - Approx. 40 Minutes
Includes Study Guide  $49.95

Scars has been described as a video with a lot of hope and positive messages for all that experience it. The film tells the story of a small built motherless youngster who is the victim of daily torment from a group of boys and girls. His main antagonist is Billy, a lucky child who has no regard for the feelings of others. Everything changes after Billy is seriously burned during a dangerous activity, returning to school several months later as a very different child. Now Billy will understand how it feels to be the victim as his friends and peers turn on him. Billy has never felt more miserable. But waiting in the wings is an unlikely little hero, a youngster who is not afraid to stand up for the rights of others, himself a youngster who knows exactly how it feels to be bullied. Scars is presented in a letterboxed widescreen format and includes a score from award-winning composer and performer Tim Janis.

Student's Against Malice - Submitted by Michael on December 21, 2006
Sam’s Forum (Students Against Malice) is comprised of students, parents, and faculty interested in school safety and the quality of human interactions in school. It is the Forum’s hope that this process would also foster socialization skills for the victims and bullies. Lastly, the surveys would adapt as needs/times/circumstances change. 1. One of the Forum’s goals is to establish a regular, ongoing system of measuring the experience and perception of safety as it pertains to the interactions between students and their peers and with staff in the school environment. Ideally, the survey would be conducted each spring for review and assessment. 2. The resulting data and annual analysis would be used as a resource for positive change, specifically, with the intent to develop programs, initiatives and to generate awareness within each school building and the district as a whole, ultimately to providing a climate conductive to learning.
